VALIE EXPORT – Textkörper [Textual Bodies]

On the occasion of VALIE EXPORT’s 85th birthday, the Department of Art History, in cooperation with the Brenner Archive Research Institute, is presenting a cabinet exhibition dedicated to the internationally renowned media and performance artist. At the center of the presentation is the short film Syntagma, complemented by additional cinematic works and, above all, archival materials from the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz / Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz. These materials document both the creation process and the reception of the work.Syntagma explores the visualization of language, raising critical questions about gender roles and the representation of the female body.

EXPORT’s engagement with media and sign systems—inseparably linked to her feminist approach—as well as the relationship between archive and artwork, are brought into focus through a site-specific curatorial lens. The accompanying program broadens the perspective, tracing a line from EXPORT’s early works to her contemporary practice. 

The exhibition was developed and realized by the Department of Art History in collaboration with the Brenner Archive Research Institute/Literaturhaus am Inn at the University of Innsbruck and the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz_ Research Center for Media and Performance Art.
