Tabea Borchardt
Scholarship for artists and artistic researchers at the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz
2023/2024

Tabea Borchardt is a visual artist who incorporates many different materials and modes of action in her work. In addition to visual and graphic aspects, the starting point of her works is the exploration of transforming photographic images, forms of display, practices of safekeeping and preservation, as well as questions about the temporality of images and what they depict.
Borchardt studied photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen where she graduated in 2019 with the work Perhaps the Material Can Still Save Us, shown below. Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in various contexts and she is represented in private as well as public collections in Germany.

During her work scholarship, Tabea Borchardt will examine VALIE EXPORT’s photographic works, documents, and studies with regard to the question of showing and not showing. Based on research in the VALIE EXPORT Center’s library and archive, the artist will relate the collection’s original material to her own artistic approach, from which she will derive a visual and narrative confrontation.
Various displays will be used and techniques applied within the context of the work, which will take the concept of sequence analysis and internalise it to investigate and juxtaposition the works.
