Netta Weiser
Scholarship for artists, arts-based researchers, and curators at the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz 2025
Netta Weiser is a Berlin-based artist working at the intersection of sound art, performance, and experimental radio. She was trained as a dancer, and holds a BA in Neuroscience and an MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Tel Aviv University. Her work has been presented internationally in contemporary art venues, performing arts festivals, sound and radio contexts. In 2019, she established the long-term artistic research project Radio-Choreography, which explores the transformation of dance into sound, the relations between live broadcasting and muted histories, as well as acts of listening as modes of being together. The project has been continuously supported through institutional collaborations, grants, and residencies. Weiser also teaches regularly at the Universität der Künste Berlin and broadcasts a monthly radio show on reboot.fm.
As part of her research fellowship at the VALIE EXPORT Center, Weiser investigates how selected works and concepts by VALIE EXPORT can be reimagined through radiophonic translation. Throughout her oeuvre, VALIE EXPORT developed strategies to challenge the voyeuristic gaze imposed on the female body. She used her own body as a site of resistance to confront systems of control, spectatorship, and gendered power structures, while employing experimental uses of media to undermine dominant narratives and reconfigure modes of perception. Approaching radio as a feminist medium, a subversive space for expanded performance, and a living archive, Weiser asks: Could the public space of radio be the most apt medium to activate and extend EXPORT’s legacy? How can radiophonic practice bring her voice into new times and spaces? How might we re-perform VALIE EXPORT on air?
Building on her ongoing engagement with creating a radiophonic archive of embodied acts of female resistance, Weiser will research EXPORT’s performative interventions, expanded cinema experiments, vocal performances, and unrealized concepts. Employing expanded choreographic methods, a queer-feminist approach, transmedial translation, and radiophonic practice, she will explore how embodied performance can persist beyond the visual realm and physical presence—and how radio can serve as an invisible stage for feminist performance art history, while generating new forms of performing, archiving, broadcasting, and listening. The research will culminate in a live performative radio broadcast from the VALIE EXPORT Center in Linz.
