Zeitbasiertes Wohnzimmer
Domgasse 1, 4th floor

The workshop offers insights into writing as part of artistic practice and engages with "biting pieces" in the archive of VALIE EXPORT.

The archive contains various text types and forms of communication (each with different expectations and rules). For example, there are texts that were later integrated into works, or sketches that preceded them. Detailed descriptions of a work process or approach to a subject sit alongside EXPORT's thoughts on current events, as well as books, newspaper articles, and materials she collected on a given topic. There are wordplays visually represented. Writing acts that only become visible through erasure. 'Sehtexte (Visual texts),' as EXPORT calls them, which appear as 'finger poems.' Press texts that absorb EXPORT’s works and eagerly incite against the artist."

As the Secretariat for Ghosts, Archive Policies, and Gaps (SKGAL), Nina Hoechtl and Julia Wieger engage with histories, historiography, and archives in the context of art and culture through installations, lecture performances, videos, workshops, texts, exhibitions, and event programs. It is important to them to incorporate feminist and decolonial perspectives. Through their artistic research, they aim to draw attention to places, documents, and objects that are often overlooked by the grand narratives of historiography. The Secretariat connects events from different times, materials, and artistic practices to create links to the present and to question mechanisms of discrimination.
As part of a Scholarship for artists and artistic researchers at the VALIE EXPORT Center, the Secretariat is currently investigating various forms of vampirism in the artist VALIE EXPORT’s archive.

The workshop takes place as part of the course "Was ist feministische Kunstgeschichte?" by Johanna Luisa Müller and in cooperation with the VALIE EXPORT Center _ Research Center for Media and Performance Art.
